Compass Program for
Academic Advancement

Becoming a great teacher is not enough to guarantee success in academia. You also need to master a variety of other skills--conducting research, writing grant applications, publishing articles and reports--while pursuing your career goals.

With this in mind, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and AAL present the Compass Program: a series of four interprofessional modules designed to provide early to mid-career faculty with guidance and understanding about career development, conducting educational research, grantsmanship, and writing for scholarship and publication.

Each module within the Compass Program provides a bridge between AAL's teaching and learning programs and those programs designed to foster academic leadership. The Compass Program modules are offered to individuals as open-enrollment courses and are applicable to all faculty regardless of position, tenure track, or FTE status. The modules may be taken individually or in sequence, and also can be customized for a single institution or academic health center.

The Compass Program provides health professions educators the opportunity to interact with colleagues from all disciplines, including medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, allied health, public health, and veterinary medicine. The design of this program provides opportunities for participants to collaborate in working groups across disciplinary lines, and promotes the exchange of ideas and experiences to help improve interprofessional education and cooperation.

Each Compass module is independent, with no prerequisites, and is priced at $595. The tuition includes class materials and lunch during the two-day program. Individuals can enroll in any or all of the modules, in any order, and at any time. Anyone who enrolls in more than one module is eligible to receive tuition discounts on subsequent programs:

  • If you enroll in two Compass modules, the tuition will be reduced to $575 for each.
  • If you enroll in three Compass modules, the tuition will be reduced to $550 for each.
  • If you enroll in all four Compass modules, the tuition will be reduced to $495 for each

If you enroll in just one Compass module and then decide to enroll in additional sessions, the multi-module discounts above will be applied and the appropriate refund will be provided. All discounts will be applied immediately if paying online, or will be reflected in the invoice we send if you or your institution prefers to pay by check.

Also, group discounts are available for 3 or more faculty attending from the same institution. For details, CONTACT US

All Compass modules are presented in Atlanta, GA, only 30 minutes from the airport, and are presented within walking distance of hotels, restaurants, public transportation, and attractions.

"This program is very rich in content and is beneficial for both entry/junior level and mid-career faculty. The concepts I had a chance to discuss are relevant to pretty much everything that I do in a daily basis." Alexandre R. Vieira, D.D.S., Ph.D.,
